Board of Directors Position: President
What does your committee (or position) do?
I am fortunate to lead the Board of Directors. This starts with a lot of planning and goal setting based on member feedback to continue to serve our chapter the best we can. Throughout the board term (September to August), the President checks in with the other Directors to ensure we are on track to meet our goals. With the dedicated group of board members we have, it is a joy to see the chapter running smoothly thanks to their leadership.
Why did you want to be on the board?
I have learned so much from SMPS and the network it provides. I cannot imagine my career without it, and I wanted to ensure that others have the same opportunities that I had. Also, I saw the opportunity to gain leadership experience in a professional setting. I think that SMPS can be a great way to flex muscles that you might not get to use with your current work or personal responsibilities.
What advice would you give to someone interested in becoming a board member?
Talk to the board members, they want to hear from you. You can email any of them through the website, so you don't need to wait to meet them at an event. Find out what their committee does and think about what you can gain from being involved on their committee. Each committee has a different function and can fit your schedule differently.
If you are already volunteering on a committee, talk to the current director of the committee, chapter president, or president-elect to let them know you may be interested.
Why do you love SMPS?
SMPS is centered around helping the AEC community be better and the content at the local, regional, and national events strongly convey that message. Locally, the SMPS Houston members are the most genuine group of people I have found. Everyone is looking to help those around them, and they do so in a selfless manner.
