MENTOR: Khris House
Texas Business Line Leader - Property & Buildings at WSP USA
Length in the industry: 22 years
SMPS Member Since: 2015
Why did you apply to the mentorship program? I have been blessed with great mentors both personally and professionally throughout my career, so I have always been a believer that you must give back what you have been given. So mentoring is my way of helping guide the career journey of other marketing/BD professionals, just as others did for me.
What do you hope to learn from each other? I hope to learn about the various career paths in the marketing/BD industry, and how we as professionals are navigating career growth with both personal and professional endeavors.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting? I plan on meet on a monthly basis with my mentor, knowing each month we can look at new challenges and goals for their particular position. But also look back at their career journey, and understand what drives their passion in the marketing/BD industry.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? I enjoy the tight-knit community we have in our industry, even as big as it is, it's still a small world. I also like the opportunity to learn and collaborate with each other, and different perspectives and knowledge sharing result in a stronger community!

PROTÉGÉ: Mariel Caballero

Why did you apply to the mentorship program? I heard great things about SMPS, like what an amazing and empowering community it is. I was new to the Business Development side, so I was looking for additional guidance and support to be a better leader in my current and future role.
What do you hope to learn from each other? I have only had one meeting so far, but I feel like I am learning so much from Khris already. I want to be a better leader, and learn better approaches in taking a lead on opportunities that may come in disguise as bumps on the road. I hope to learn from his experience to set attainable current and future goals that best fit my vision. Improve and evolve my current skills to a new level. Challenge myself with new ideas and strategies.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting? Share current and future goals, and start setting the stage to start working on some of those goals. Sharing ideas and experience.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? The community is so friendly and supportive. I think the amount of information out there is huge, and it is not hard finding someone who is willing to listen and help. There are many organizations with great initiatives, information, and support.
