Deanna Rodriguez, CPSM
Marketing Manager at Walter P Moore
SMPS Member since: 2005
Board of Directors Position: President-Elect

What does your committee (or position) do?
The part that is the most interactive is being responsible for the Member Award nominations and preparing those for the Design Awards gala. My position also assists the President in overseeing the board and serves as an additional resource for all positions and committees. I’m available to the board and the chapter!

Why did you want to be on the board?
I’ve served on the SMPS Houston board in the past, but this role always seemed intimidating. After years in the AEC industry and this organization, I thought now is the time. I wanted to give back to a chapter that has done so much for me, both personally and professionally. I spoke with my 9-year-old daughter about the commitment and wanted her to see me stepping into this role, knowing I have a support system; and that she is a part of that!

What do you hope to accomplish as director/chair?
I hope to keep the momentum building as we continue getting back to “normal” since the pandemic. Drew Prochaska hosted a Strategic Planning Session to kick off a 3-year plan and it was the roadmap we needed to stay focused on different areas of the chapter. One area I feel more compelled to highlight is promoting the talents of our membership. I think this will give members the opportunity to impact others on a more personal level.

What advice would you give to someone interested in becoming a board member?
Do it. Invest in your growth and invest in yourself! Start with a committee you find interesting, and keep embracing the responsibilities! When you are ready for more, chime in and ask!

Why do you love SMPS?
I love the networking opportunities provided by SMPS. I’ve met some amazing and talented individuals in this industry. Some have been mentors while I've grown together professionally with others. After over 15 years, it has been a constant in my own professional development and I always encourage newbies to join and see how their career paths will take off. Getting a chance to now help a new crop of members is such a great feeling.
