SMPS Member Since: 1999, Past President 2017 - 2018, One2One Mentoring Program Co-Chair
Why did you apply to the mentorship program? This will be the fourth time I've served as a mentor through the SMPS Houston Chapter's One2One Program. It is always rewarding to give back to the organization and industry that has given so much to me. It is an inspiring program no matter the role you have in the pairing. Like-minded professionals supporting each other is empowering.
What do you hope to learn from each other? I am discovering that Megan and I are a great fit. Our discussions have reminded me so much of my earlier career and I hope I offer her helpful guidance/ideas. Her insights have offered tremendous value to me as well. Learning her perspective is allowing me to apply new things to my management tool box.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting? Conversation flows easily for Megan and I. Seems we both appreciate the organic impromptu structure of our meetings. We usually part with a plan for next session and what we'll cover, but we also keep the topics to things that are top of mind for us both.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? I appreciate that there are so many ways to utilize our marketing skills in this profession. You can be a specialist in RFQs, interviews, communications, event planning, client/community engagement - the list goes on. Or you can wear all those hats. It is truly rewarding to work in a creative space with designers and help change the world through my contributions.
PROTÉGÉ: Megan Stevens
Pursuit Marketing Manager at Satterfield & Pontikes Construction
Length in the industry: 4 years
SMPS Member since: 2018, Membership Committee and Gala Committee
Why did you apply to the mentorship program? To push myself and grow in my career.
What do you hope to learn from each other? Gain industry insight and advice in order to become a stronger team member and leader to the community and S&P team.
How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting? We are using the Gap Analysis as a starting point, and from there I am coming with goals and discussion points to our standing monthly coffee dates. We are also hoping to partner up with other groups to have wider discussions.
What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? I love the group aspect! I am drawn to all of the moving parts and people it takes to put a project together, and knowing the importance my piece brings to the whole puzzle - knowing I have contributed to something much bigger for communities.
