Tara Kirkland
Marketing Director at Anslow-Bryant Construction
SMPS Member since: 2017
Length in the industry: 8 years
SMPS Committee Member: Special Events

Can you offer a helpful hint to fellow SMPS members?
Get involved. Membership is what you make out of it.  I was hesitant at first because the 1st event I had attended wasn't that fun. One of my friends that was on Special Events convinced me to join the committee and the benefits of the organization quickly became apparent after my involvement.

What has been your memorable SMPS event to date, and why?
The Bingo event in 2021. Not only was it the 1st in-person event after Covid it was also my 1st in-person event after moving back to Houston. It was great seeing old friends and making new ones. I loved the networking game because it allowed us to get to know new things about each other that we might not have known before.

What is the best career advice you have ever received?
You're going to make some big mistakes and a ton of little mistakes throughout your career. It is how you handle yourself and learn from the experience that matters. Don't sweat the small stuff.

If you were not in this industry, what would be your "dream job"?
Working for the Astros. In college I took a lot of Sports Marketing classes but quickly found out that it is incredibly hard to get into.
Or
A crime scene investigator or a FBI Profiler. I love crime shows.

What would you do with a year off?
Travel, read, and do a lot of crafts.

What food have you tried that was the furthest out of your comfort zone?
I grew up overseas traveling a lot so there is not much that is out of my comfort zone when it comes to food. I would have to say ant mole sauce. I did not know what it was at the time otherwise I would have never ate it.
