MENTOR: Melanie Meeks, CPSM
Partner at Meeks Marketing, Inc.
Length in the industry: 19
SMPS Member Since: 2003, Past President 2016 - 2017

Why did you apply to the mentorship program?  I enjoy meeting up and coming professionals in our industry. Many AEC marketers helped mentor and encourage me when I first started my career so it is nice to be able to do the same for others.

What do you hope to learn from each other?   I look forward to sharing our network with each other, and helping to make connections and achieve goals together.

How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting?  I always want the protege to get the most out of the partnership as possible so I have asked her to set goals and each month when we meet we will go over the progress of the goals and have a monthly agenda of things to discuss.

What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry?  It's a close knit industry and marketing professional services is a very unique type of marketing. I enjoy getting to feature the incredible talent and projects for the companies we work with.

Why did you apply to the mentorship program? Last years mentorship program went so well I definitely wanted to do it again. Not only is the mentorship great to grow your network but you both get to learn so much from each other.

What do you hope to learn from each other? This year I’m moving into a manager role. I am really hoping to get some insights on how to manage a team and grow the departments responsibilities. I hope that together we are able to bounce ideas off of one another and grow together.

How did you (or plan to) structure your mentorship? Do you meet at the same time every week? Do you have an agenda for each meeting? Last years mentorship program was fairly casual. I’d email my mentor with some questions before our meeting and then at our meeting we would discuss those subjects.

What do you like best about working in the A/E/C industry? I like that there is a huge opportunity for marketing. Not only to execute great work but also to create processes that maybe have never been put in place. Some will see it as a challenge but I see it as an opportunity and it makes me so excited.
