The Title of the First
Hi!  I’m Tiffany Yewens. Business challenges approach us more frequently than we would prefer, especially when working in an industry that experiences exponential growth and changes daily. At LJA Engineering, Inc. (LJA), we were recently presented with a challenge when two key leaders in our marketing department stepped away from the firm – simultaneously. While we were excited that they were pursuing their dreams of starting their own marketing firm, we were also experiencing a challenge that shook us to our core.

This challenge ultimately led us to a time of organizational reflection. As we tackled succession lists and rerouted tasks, we also evaluated roles and the opportunity to restructure. With this, I was personally presented with a unique opportunity to emerge into a new role – a role not only new to me but also LJA.

I’m proud to share that I accepted the promotion to become LJA’s first-ever Content Strategist. This role delivers digital and print content across various formats and channels. Collaboration is critical in this role, helping to translate technical jargon into stories and content assets that increase value for clientele and employee-owners alike. My general work scope includes website and social content, proposal and sales content, internal and external marketing campaigns, and more.

What initially seemed like a problematic and daunting barrier, creating unease for our entire team, produced great opportunities across the board. In the beginning, we lacked an understanding of direction but eventually collaborated to pave our new way. Not only was I presented with the personal challenge to grow my skill set and career, but LJA and our team witnessed first-hand the reward of perseverance.

My best piece of advice for those entering uncharted territory is to look beyond the barriers. These barriers exist because of doubt and distract you from what you’ll learn in hindsight. Find support where you can, whether from within your organization or your drive. When you become receptive, the tools and resources you need for success are often apparent. Trust in the detour, the challenges, and the barriers. They are there to push you to where you desire to be, and in hindsight, you’ll realize their worth. There is a “first” for everything, and there must be someone behind the execution of that “first.” The key is persevering to earn the title of the first.
